Outdoorsmen: Blood, Sweat & Beers, The

“So *this* is a guy’s ultimate weekend getaway…”
**** (Worth A Look)
SCREENED AT THE 2005 AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL: I don’t believe I’ve ever seen so much beer consumed on camera before, in my entire life. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much beer consumed…like…ever.

The Outdoorsmen spends a little exposition time getting to know its cast of leading men, all regular professional-types in Washington state, who seem sober enough.

But they are also the men invited to compete in the annual ‘Outdoorsman’ tournament; some are veterens of more than 10 years, others don’t know what they’re in for. But none are assholes. “Assholes” aren’t allowed.

And soon enough, the weekend escape begins — the family man, the business man, the otherwise evolved homo sapien…turns into the manly man, competing in various games, all for the glory of winning that first place trophy and the year’s title of the ‘Outdoorsman.’

So what is it that these 30,40,50 yr-olds do outdoors? Why, they guzzle beer after beer after beer, as drinking alcohol is the “great equalizer,” in games that test their strength, speed, endurance, and…ability to look like complete and utter fools.

I have to say, The Outdoorsmen’s got some of the most laugh out loud moments I’ve experienced all year; just imagine, if you can, two partners rolling around in a roped in circle, on the dirt, blinded with goggles, frantically searching for 4 items — you guessed it, beer cans — and upon finding all four, they instantly chug them down and record their time for points. Tru-hust me, it’s a funny sight.

Think of it like Jackass: All Grown Up.

Except not totally — these are simply a group of close buddies who merely want to abandon all responsibility for two days out of the year and commune and indulge in their beer-drinking manhood. And it’s all very harmless and darned funny.

“WHAT TO SEE AT THE AUSTIN FILM FESTIVAL”

The Outdoorsmen: Blood, Sweat, & Beers

D: Scott Allen Perry

Beer-drinking and hatchet-throwing. That’s all you need to know about The Outdoorsmen, a documentary about what Robert Bly’s navel-gazing Wildman outings could have been with a blue-collar imagination. Thirtysomething former high school jocks from rural Washington State compete in a brutal Ironman-esque contest with brewsky-chugging thrown into all events. Ample beer bellies attest to the competition’s 15-year history. Director Perry (no relation to filmmaker Scott Perry of Austin) scores on the doc basics: Find a good subject and treat it as seriously as you can. The result is a compelling film with intriguing characters. Pass me a cold one. – Joe O’Connell
The Outdoorsmen screens as part of the Documentary Competition on Thursday, Oct. 20, 9:30pm at the Hideout, and Tuesday, Oct. 25, 9:30pm at the IMAX.
