November 6th, 2005AN EXERCISE IN BEER: The award for most interesting film premise at the festival goes to the documentary The Outdoorsmen: Blood, Sweat & Beers. A pack of thirtysomething former high school football stars from Washington State disappear into the woods once a year for their own Olympiad, with beer drinking included in most every event, including hatchet throwing. Scott Walker, the token skinny guy, is desperate to win, but will he pass out first? Ringleader Dan White is totally stuck in high school glory days.
CALL OF THE WILD: Scott Allen Perry’s Outdoorsmen is the blue-collar answer to poet Robert Bly’s higher-brow wild-man outings in which grown men cried about their dads. Only these guys replace the tears with puke and collapse in the bushes.
